Frequently Asked Questions
Click any question to expand the answer
What is the ESTA and do I need one to attend?
ESTA (Electronic System for Travel Authorization) is a mandatory pre-travel requirement for citizens of 42 Visa Waiver Program countries traveling to the United States by air or sea. It is not a visa — it's an automated eligibility check that costs $21 USD, is applied for online at esta.cbp.dhs.gov, and typically approved within minutes. Most European, Australian and Japanese passport holders need one. It's valid for 2 years. Citizens of countries not in the VWP need a full B-2 visitor visa from a US Embassy. Canada requires an eTA (electronic Travel Authorization, C$7) for most foreign nationals flying in.
How does the brand-new Round of 32 work?
The Round of 32 is a new knockout stage unique to the 2026 World Cup. After the group stage, 32 teams qualify: the top 2 from each of the 12 groups (24 teams) plus the 8 best 3rd-place finishers. These 32 teams are then drawn into 16 single-elimination matches. Lose and you're out — no second chances. This round takes place June 28–July 3, with matches spread across multiple US host cities. Winners advance to the traditional Round of 16.
Can a team finish 3rd in their group and still advance?
Yes — this is one of the most important rule changes in 2026. The 8 best 3rd-place finishers across all 12 groups advance to the Round of 32. That means 12 teams finish 3rd, but only 8 qualify. The ranking of 3rd-place teams uses: points → goal difference → goals scored → fair play points → drawing of lots. This means no group stage game is guaranteed to be a dead rubber — even teams on 3 points with a tough final match may be fighting for a qualifying 3rd-place ranking.
Where can I buy official World Cup 2026 tickets?
Official tickets are sold exclusively through FIFA's ticketing portal at fifa.com/tickets. You'll need a free FIFA ID to purchase. Sales go through several phases — some already sold out. For secondary market tickets, Viagogo, StubHub and Ticketmaster resale are the major platforms, though prices are significantly higher. Never buy tickets through social media, email offers, or unofficial websites — FIFA cancels tickets obtained through unauthorized resellers. Group stage tickets started around $60–80 (Cat. 4) and the Final at up to $6,730 (Cat. 1).
What are the exact tiebreaker rules for the group stage?
If two or more teams are equal on points, FIFA applies these tiebreakers in order:

1. Goal difference in all group matches
2. Goals scored in all group matches
3. Points in head-to-head matches among the tied teams
4. Goal difference in head-to-head matches
5. Goals scored in head-to-head matches
6. Fair play points (yellow = -1, red = -3, yellow+red = -4)
7. Drawing of lots by FIFA

Note that head-to-head record (criteria 3–5) only applies after overall goal difference and goals scored.
When do yellow card suspensions reset?
Yellow cards accumulate from the Group Stage through to the end of the Round of 16. Any player who receives two yellow cards during this period is suspended for one match. After the Round of 16, all yellow card records are wiped clean — players enter the Quarterfinals with a clean slate. Red cards (whether direct or from two yellows in one match) result in an automatic one-match ban for the next game, regardless of stage.
What time zones are the matches played in?
Host cities span three US time zones during summer (DST active):

Pacific Time (PT / UTC-7): Los Angeles, San Francisco, Seattle, Vancouver
Central Time (CT / UTC-5): Dallas, Houston, Kansas City, Mexico City, Guadalajara, Monterrey
Eastern Time (ET / UTC-4): New York, Atlanta, Boston, Miami, Philadelphia, Toronto

Standard kickoff windows are 12:00, 3:00, 6:00, and 9:00 PM ET (adjust for your zone). For European viewers: a 9 PM ET kickoff is 3 AM BST / 4 AM CEST the following day.
Where is the Final and how many matches does MetLife host?
The World Cup Final takes place on July 19, 2026 at 3:00 PM ET at MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, New Jersey — temporarily renamed "New York New Jersey Stadium" for the tournament under FIFA's commercial naming policy. Capacity is 87,157. MetLife hosts 8 matches in total: 5 group stage games + Round of 32 (×2) + the Final. The stadium will feature the first-ever World Cup Final halftime show. Natural grass was installed specially, transported from Tuckahoe Turf Farms in NJ.
Which country is hosting for the first time?
Canada is hosting a FIFA World Cup for the first time ever. Canada's venues are BMO Field in Toronto and BC Place in Vancouver, hosting 13 matches between them. Mexico is hosting for a record third time (1970, 1986, and 2026) — no other country has hosted three times. The US last hosted in 1994. This is the first tri-nation co-hosted World Cup in history, and the first tournament held simultaneously across three countries.
How are the 8 best 3rd-place teams selected?
After all 12 groups complete, the 12 teams that finished 3rd are ranked against each other using the same criteria applied within groups: points → goal difference → goals scored → fair play → lots. The best 8 of these 12 teams advance to the Round of 32. The worst 4 are eliminated. All 3rd-place teams' records are compared using only their 3 group stage matches, regardless of which group they came from.
Are there alcohol restrictions at the stadiums?
In the USA and Canada, alcohol will be sold at stadiums, including inside the bowl — which is a change from Qatar 2022 where alcohol was heavily restricted. Beer and spirits will be available from concessions throughout matches. In Mexico, alcohol sales at stadiums are subject to local regulations and may vary by venue. Fans are generally not permitted to bring their own alcohol into any official FIFA venue.
Will there be a VAR system at the 2026 World Cup?
Yes. Video Assistant Referee (VAR) will be used at all 104 matches, as it was at the 2018 and 2022 World Cups. FIFA is also trialing semi-automated offside technology (SAOT), which uses multiple cameras and AI to generate 3D player models and deliver near-instant offside decisions — eliminating the long waits seen during Qatar 2022 VAR checks. Goal-line technology (GLT) will also be deployed at all venues.
